Newton Crest"Over two thousand years ago, Sir John Newton, of Barr's Court and of Corbin Hall, was the owner of vast landed estates in Yorkshire, extending from Hull to Carlton, and to Campbell's Forth. In the year 1660 John Newton, son of Thomas, and grandson of Sir John, of Barr's Court, sailed for the Colony of Virginia and settled in Westmoreland County. He fell heir to this property at Hull and at Carlton and at Campbell's Forth, but, he being absent in far-off Virginia, administrators were appointed * * * finally the property was leased for one hundred years. John Newton in Virginia had become a wealthy man. He died in 1697, and his will was dated August 19, 1695. He bequeathed to his eldest son, John, who had been educated in England, the whole English estate at Hull, Carlton and at Campbell's Forth, with much land in Westmoreland, King George, and Stafford Counties, Virginia. The English estate continued to be handed down from father to son for four generations. The Newton family is one of the oldest in England and John Newton has many distinguished ancestors, among whom were Sir Richard Newton, Chief Justice of England; Sir Thomas Newton, knighted by King Richard during the Crusades; Sir John Newton, Sword Bearer of King Richard II; Sir John Newton, Lord Mayor of York, etc." (An article in the London Times, of 1777.)

In the book Seldens of Virginia and Allied Families, Volume II by Mary Selden Kennedy published by Frank Allaben Genealogical Company, 1914, and now part of the public domain, the author details a great deal of the Newton pedigree for us. John Newton, who sailed to the Virginia Colony in 1660, is Wilmary Dickey's 7x great grandfather.

Sir Alfred Newton, Lord Mayor of London, 1900, is a descendant of the brother of John Newton who settled in Virginia in 1660. The ancient Newton home in England is still a landmark, though hardly more than a pile of ruins. The massive stone blocks of the front entrance have crumbled down, and, with them, armorial bearings, which once showed the "Kneeling Prince and the Knight in Armor," with the shield and cross-bows, all deeply carved thereon.

Before assuming the name of Newton, the family name was Caradoc, some time later called Cradock. Sir Richard Cradock Newton, a son of Sir Richard Cradock and Lord Chief Justice of England, assumed the name of Newton, the name of his manor.

The Newton family can trace their descendants for more than two thousand years, in direct line from Prince Caractacus, who became King Caradoc of Britain in A. D. 53.

The following is from an article appearing in the Baltimore Sun.

"Arms—Original Caradoc arms. Argent on a chevron azure, three garbs or.

"Crest—Prince Caractacus in armor, upon left knee delivering his sword to Claudius Caesar.

"This coat of arms, renewed to Sir Anselin, Lord of Newton and Gurney, by King Richard Coeur de Leon, on the field of Ascalon, 1192, with this difference: Vert, two shin bones, in saltire, the sinister surmounted of the dexter argent.

"Crest—An eastern proper prince crowned or, kneeling ana delivering up his sword blade hilt or. Motto: 'Huic habet non tibi.'

"This coat of arms was again renewed by Queen Elizabeth, in 1567, and again confirmed to the Newton family in 1662.

"The investigation of the Newton records by genealogists and attorneys of England and Virginia was done for the purpose of establishing the direct line of the Newtons and to confirm the title to the large family estates in Yorkshire, England.

"The description of the gradual development and adoption of the coat of arms is full of interest.

"The Newton family can trace their descendants for more than two thousand years, in direct line from Prince Caractacus, who became King Caradoc of Britain in A. D. 53."
