I was at the Library of Congress, trying to find the parents of my John W. Crowder b. 1808 in Virginia. Though I was not able to locate the parents on that visit, I did get several good notes and references to early Virginia Crowders. Some day, I am sure I will tie at least one of these Crowders to my kin.

I present these records here in the hopes that 1) I don't lose them while I continue to dig for the Crowders in my tree, and 2) you may find them useful in your own Crowder research. ;)

Mr. Hugh Crowder came in the "Bona Nova" 1619. He is listed in the Musters of the Inhabitants in Virginia 1624/1625 taken between 20 Jan and 7 Feb 1624/25. This muster was a kind of census taken of the Virginia colonists shortly after the Indian massacre, primarily to identify the dead. His plantation was in/near James Citty and his holdings included: "Corne, 16 barrells; Fish, 1000; Powder, 3lb; Shott and bullets, 50 lb; Peeces [which means weapons, usually pistols], 12; Armours, 6; Swords, 6; Forte, 1; houses, 2." The muster also lists 5 adult male servants.

p. 16

James Crowder arrived on the "Returne" in 1623 and is listed under the Muster of Mrs. Katherine Bennett. It appears he died prior to the muster having been taken - though not in the Indian massacre, as that was in 1622.
