It turns out that my husband's grandfather is the 34 x great grandson of Charlemagne, and my grandmother is the 37 x great granddaughter of Charlemagne, which makes us 36th cousins 3 times removed. Naturally, the evidence for relationships beyond 9-12 generations is limited, at best, and should be treated as family lore or hearsay, probably. Still, it is amusing to draw the lines and see. I find that if you can get a Western European ancestor back to the late 1500s or early 1600s, you can then (usually) find a mythical connection back to one of the royal lines in Europe.
