The freeholders of Mecklenburg County (on 08 APR 1776 and 14 APR 1777) were polled to elect two delegates to serve in the Revolutionary Convention, which was later called the General Assembly. In the "Virginia Genealogist, Volume 26," there is an article listing the names of the freeholders and how they voted. The candidates for delegate were Col. Robert Munford, Mr. Henry Delony, Mr. Joseph Speed, and Col. Bennett Goode. The author of this article makes a strong case that by casting their votes, these men were violating British law and thus acting as Revolutionary Patriots and should thus be eligible for descendants to claim as a Revolutionary patriot for the purpose of membership in DAR or SAR. Here are the Crowders enumerated in the Mecklenburg poll lists: Abraham Crowder (for Col. Robert Munford and Joseph Speed) Batt Crowder (for Mr. Henry Delony and Mr. Joseph Speed) George Crowder (for Col. Robert Munford and Mr. Henry Delony and later for Mr. Joseph Speed and Mr. Henry Delony) Godfrey Crowder (for Mr. Joseph Speed) James Crowder (for Mr. Henry Delony and Mr. Joseph Speed) John Crowder (for Col. Robert Munford and Mr. Joseph Speed) William Crowder (for Col. Robert Munford and Mr. Joseph Speed)
